Glasgow trying to lose staff
Glasgow University is trying to shed staff in an attempt to reduce its £10.5m deficit. It's been offering voluntary redundancies for a while but so far only half have been taken.If the redundancies turn compulsory the AUT union is threatening to "greylist" the university, meaning that members in other universities may refuse to cooperate with it. When that happened at London Met, external moderation got held up and some students are still waiting for their marks.

Banned academic to teach at Oxford
Professor Tariq Ramadan, an Islamic scholar who was banned from the US, is to teach at Oxford. Time magazine seems to like him, but the Homeland Security people did not. Neither did The Sun in the UK.25 Aug

'No confidence' in Welsh vice-chancellor
Lecturers at the University of Wales Institute in Cardiff have passed a vote of no confidence in their vice-chancellor, Tony Chapman.The Natfhe vote went 93% to 7% against Mr Chapman on a 56% turnout. Staff are said to be unhappy with his leadership, particularly in relation to a potential merger.

Student finds exam results online early
News from Durham where an "enterprising" business student has discovered his exam results online three days before they should have been published.Apparently he'd been fiddling with the URLs where the results were due to be published, based on ones that already had been.
A spokesman said it was a "minor" problem, the Guardian reports.
