Tempers flare in Tehran

Students from Tehran, Iran's capital city, converged on the British embassy last night following a rebuff by the EU to the development of Iranian nuclear power facilities.

Iran has been involved in an ongoing confrontation with the US and the EU over the development of a nuclear reactor. The Iranian government claims that it requires the power plant to produce energy for the country's expanding economy. The major Western powers maintain that Iran is attempting to construct a nuclear weapon.

Britain, which holds the presidency of the EU, took the lead in remonstrating with the Iranian government over their atomic ambitious via the International Atomic Energy agency.

According to the Chinese Xinhua news agency students chanting anti-British slogans attempted to break into the embassy complex and were only beaten back after the police deployed tear gas.
