New Pope for the future

Power to the Papal

It took two days and four ballots but it’s finally over: the bells have rung and the smoke was indeed white; a new Pope has been chosen. Whether or not you are a Catholic or even indeed a Christian, the Pope will have a significant effect on the world in the 21st Century.

Here is our rundown on the new Pope:

  • He has chosen the name Pope Benedict XVI

  • His real name is Joseph Ratzinger

  • He is 78 years old

  • He was born in Germany on 16th April 1927

  • He is the 256th Pope

  • He has been known as 'God’s rottwieler'

  • He has also been described as a conservative disciplinarian

So there it is: the new Pope is hardly a spring chicken. He is the leader for a sixth of the world, but can he get rid of tuition fees? We can all pray, but poverty and the like may be higher on his agenda.
