Montréal students protest against grant cuts
Hundreds of students took to the streets of Montréal on Saturday to protest against government cuts to their grants.
A $103m cut is planned for the Quebec bursary scheme which provides for the maintenance of students in the province. There are hopes that the education minister for the governing Liberal party will meet with student leaders later this week to discuss the cuts.
Relations between the government and student leaders deteriorated last Friday when over 50 students were arrested for taking part in civil disobedience against the cuts. Strike action is also due at the University of Concordia today following a vote at the General Assembly of the Student Union.
