Election 2005: Lib Dems target tuition fees

The Liberal Democrats were today talking up their flagship policy of abolishing tuition fees.

Charles Kennedy has committed his party to finding £5 million worth of savings elsewhere to protect students from having to pay up to £3,000 a year for their university tuition.

"We should not be saddling our young people with huge debts as they start out in life," Mr Kennedy said. "People from low income backgrounds should not be put off university because of the costs."

Meanwhile all the main parties look likely to publish their manifestos early next week – more details to come then.
