Third of students to vote Lib Dem
Almost a third of students say they will vote Liberal Democrat at the next general election, a poll for the THES has revealed. 31% of the thousand students questioned at 160 institutions said they favoured the party, with 28% preferring Labour – up from 20% last year – and just 16% supporting the Conservatives.
Younger students are more likely to vote against the government, with a quarter of first-years saying they would vote Labour compared to nearly a third of finalists. This is reflected in the numbers that say tuition fees will be a deciding factor – 24% versus 14%.
There also continues to be a divide between old and new universities: 32% of students at newer universities say they will vote Labour, compared to 24% of students at old universities.
Students have clear expectations about who will win, too: 75% say Labour, 10% the Conservatives and 6% the Lib Dems. Some, however, are slightly less well informed, with one each saying the SNP and Plaid Cymru.
