NUS media awards shortlist announced

The shortlist for this year's NUS/Daily Mirror National Student Media Awards has been announced, with few surprises in the top category.

Last year's winner Gair Rhydd is again in the running for the Best Student Newspaper category, along with the two hardy perennials at York, Cherwell at Oxford and the London Student. 2004 runners-up the Leeds Student didn't make it through.

It is all change in the magazine category, though. Smiths (Goldsmiths College) won last year and is up for the equivalent Guardian award again, but failed to score with the NUS. Lippy, Soup, The Pulse, The Smoke and Less Common, More Sense were all nominated.

Cardiff, Leeds and Oxford dominate many of the individual categories, while the Warwick Boar is again a finalist in the website category. It is joined by Pi Magazine, Uni Balls, Durham21 and Sheffield Base.

The winners will be announced at a London awards ceremony on 12th November.

  • The Rundown was not allowed to enter the awards. The rules dictate that all entrants must be NUS members, which they were, but the NUS said that The Rundown could not enter because it was not run by an NUS-affiliated students' union.
