Student radio stations support tsunami appeal day

Student radio stations are to join with commercial radio stations for UK Radio Aid on Monday. The unprecedented charity event will see rival radio stations from across the country combining their output for the day with the help of celebrities to raise money for the tsunami appeal. All money will go to the Disasters Emergency Committee, including a day's profits from each of the commercial stations.

York University Radio, Bristol UWE's The Hub and Coventry's Source FM have all signed up for the appeal. Stations using NonStopPlay.com as a sustaining feed, including Herfordshire's Crush and London's Insanity, will also be participating.

Students Unions have also been fund-raising for the victims of the tsunami. Most have held collections through their RAG organisations, while some are holding special events. Loughborough, for example, is to put on a sponsored swim.

With many students studying in the UK coming from the region, unions have also been providing support to those whose families and friends may have been affected. International students' associations have been offering advice and help, while Welfare officers have ensured that counselling is available should it be needed. Others have also posted extensive information on their websites – Surrey's is a particularly good example.

So far the DEC has received 2.8 million donations, with some predicting that it will raise as much as £200m.
