Not a good time to be a graduate after all
It might not be such a "good time" to be a graduate after all, figures obtained by the Guardian show. Last month the higher education minister, Kim Howells, was pleased to report that 93% of graduates go into full-time employment or education within six months, but it now transpires that more than a third end up in non-graduate jobs.
The reasons are probably twofold. Firstly, graduates face huge debts from student loans – few can afford to sit around and wait for their ideal jobs. Secondly, there may not be any jobs in their subject areas – put simply, there are too many graduates in some subjects.
Which is a slight problem since the government is determined to achieve that magical and totally random figure of 50% of school-leavers going into higher education.
A government spokesman confirmed to the Guardian that, despite huge debts and 38% failing to find jobs they are qualified for, it is still a good time to be a graduate. That's a relief.
