End to age limits on student loans

The ban on student loans for the over-54s is to be scrapped because it is discriminatory, the Observer reported yesterday. Instead, one of three options is likely to be chosen: the age cap will be abolished on tuition loans but kept on maintenance loans; it will be abolished on tuition loans and raised to pension age or 65 on maintenance loans; or all age restrictions will be done away with.

A member of the working group set up to consider the options told the Observer that doing nothing was not an option. Higher Education Minister Kim Howells will be presented with the options on Wednesday.
