Student drops Rooney accusation
The student who accused Wayne Rooney of punching him in a Manchester nightclub has decided to drop the claims.
22-year-old Patrick Hanrahan from Middlesbrough had alleged that he had been attacked by the England and Manchester United star in the city's Tiger Tiger nightclub, apparently after Hanrahan had taunted the footballer over his move from Everton worth £28 million.
Greater Manchester Police today said that the case had been dropped following a retraction of the statement by the student.
It is understood that Mr Hanrahan made reference to Rooney's former team on 22nd March, shouting "once a blue, always a blue", which it is alleged might have provoked Rooney into punching him.
A complaint was made against the England star, following the story having been given to the Sun, just 16 hours after the alleged incident, which 19-year-old Rooney has constantly denied.
A spokeswoman for the police told BBC News, "We were informed that the complainant did not want to purse the allegation. We took a distraction statement from him and officers will not be pursuing the matter any further."
Meanwhile, Rooney is today training with the rest of the England team in preparation for tonight's World Cup qualifying match against Azerbaijan.
