Hull's maths department (still) to close

The rest of the British media has finally caught on to the fact that Hull University is to close its maths department. As we exclusively reported way back in December, falling student numbers and low research funding are to blame. Students were emailed again a week ago to say that the final, final decision had been made.

Having noticed this fact over the past 48 hours, various newspapers are naturally quite concerned. Most have quotes from the London Mathematical Society, that well-known institution which represents mathematicians, saying that it is "extremely worried" and "fearful" that more departments may close in the future.

Maths students currently at Hull will be able to finish their degrees and most staff will be kept on. Students who have applied for September are being given help to find places at other universities.
