Cambridge architecture department is safe
The architecture department at Cambridge University will survive after a national campaign to save it. The decision to close it was put off last month when mass protests were held, but its continuance is now assured.
The department will not survive unscathed, however. Six out of 17 academics will leave, including three who will take early retirement. There has also been a "radical" restructuring in recent weeks, and there will be a new focus on research, particularly in sustainable design, which it hopes will boost its research income.
Staff and students have been celebrating, and the university says it has confidence in the department's future success.
