Review: National Treasure

National Treasure, a hash between Oceans Eleven, Mummy Returns and James Bond minus the huge cash sums, sand and tacky chat-up lines.

Film info

Certificate: PG
Director: Jon Turtletaub
Cast: Nicholas Cage, Sean Bean, Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha
Released 24th December
A family-inherited puzzle leading to 'National Treasure' means a 'good' guy turns 'bad' guy for the money, the technical buddy who hilariously helps to gain a clue and of course the gorgeous Hollywood love interest, who recently starred as the most beautiful woman in the world in Troy, so she must be good. But Hallelujah for Hollywood, this film missed off the on-screen sex and replaced it with a snatched kiss in a cobwebbed tunnel! What else can you do with a PG?

To start and get it out of my system: WOW! This film managed to hold the tension and tiny storylines together with ease while providing comic moments even when at the height of the action, however you need to watch with an open mind to appreciate it. Many 'Eeeew' moments: blood, skeletons and a whole load more cringe moments; with chases, chunks of American History and profuse apologies but oozing sex appeal produced by the aging Nicholas Cage - make-up did a good job!

One problem however, for a proud Brit, the reason the "National Treasure" was hidden in the first place was because of a bunch of crusaders thought the British would steal it and from them and hid it in the form of Masons! What is it with the Americans and them blaming us for everything? I personally found it offensive! Also it was a typical movie, you knew the end before the second scene, and you had the protagonist, funny man, girlfriend and sceptical father.

This is a great film, not for exceptional stunts or an adaptation of a famous story but for being good all round. I seriously recommend a viewing if you found the above films interesting or just fancy a 'nice' movie for a change. I can guarantee in twenty years time that this will be a cult classic similar to Indiana Jones and one that is bound to be on Christmas TV with its sequel(s) that are in the pipeline. It was enthralling and will be arm crunching for the person you sit next to, and I am speaking from personal experience...
