Preview: Films out before Christmas

Taxi - on release 19 November

I am getting rather sick of Hollywood remakes and this one is by far the worst. Not only have they stolen the best ideas, but they have quite possibly put together the worst cast in movie history. The cast consists of one famous person, Queen Latifah, but at least it's a supposed comedienne. The roles have been given to the wrong people and quite frankly the original movie is a gem that should not have been scuffed by this rubbish, I will not be watching this film - and that's based on the trailer!

The Manchurian Candidate - on release 19 November

Now down to business, a good quality film with a true Hollywood heavyweight or three thrown in for good measure. 'Man on Fire', the last offering from the Denzel Washington stable, was fantastic: it had its critics but my colleagues in the cinema world loved it, it was a classy 'Punisher'.

The next in the line-up is the controversial 'The Manchurian Candidate'. It's yet another remake, however it has been made for the thinking person and to stir the imagination of an army of conspiracy nuts. Go and see this film if you think you can keep up with the sub-plots it no doubt has; if you can't it is an American film so it will have been dumbed down for mass international audiences.

Shaolin Soccer - on release 12 November

We all remember how Jackie Chan turned the martial arts genre into an accessible medium. Following in his footsteps were daft films like 'Kung Pow' (brilliantly funny) and that more Hollywood like film 'The Bullet-Proof Monk'. These have led to where we are now, a bizarre mix of football and violence and yet there are no pubs or nasty provocative chants in sight. The trailer was far more amusing than some supposed comedies that I have sat through. Worth watching if you can.

Garden State - on release 10 December

This looks very interesting indeed. Do you watch 'Scrubs'? Well if you do I think you will probably like this one. Zach Braff is the writer, the director and he stars in it (in 'Scrubs' he's the Doctor who the show is pretty much about). Somehow he has persuaded Natalie Portman to co-star. I don't quite know what it's about but it looks fun, go and see it.
