Last update: 19 Jul 2005 10:56

The Department for Education and Skills is the government department with overall responsibility for the country's policies and legislation on education and skills. Established in 2001 following the Whitehall shake-up which saw the Department for Education and Employment scrapped, the Department's website states its purposes as being "creating opportunity, releasing potential and achieving excellence for all".

There is a team of seven ministers heading the department, currently comprising of:

  • Ruth Kelly, Secretary of State
  • Jacqui Smith, Minister of State for Schools
  • Beverley Hughes, Minister of State for Children and Families
  • Bill Rammell, Minister of State for Higher Education and Lifelong Learning
  • Maria Eagle, Phil Hope and Lord Adonis – junior ministers responsible for supporting the ministers of state.
