Mumps

Last update: 17 May 2005 12:39 ~ Edward Jacobs

Recent reports have shown a dramatic increase in the number of people contracting mumps, a condition which – if left untreated - can cause fertility problems in men, problems for pregnant women as well as meningitis. With many of those at university having been born before the Measles, Mumps and Rubella vaccine was introduced in 1988, students are particularly at risk. In order to be fully protect, two doses of the MMR vaccine are required: an initial injection followed later by a booster.

Mumps is a condition which can be passed on via coughs and sneezes from those affected. Symptoms include:

  • Pain when chewing and swallowing

  • Sore throat

  • Fever

  • Feeling tired

  • Loss of appetite

  • Mild abdominal pain

  • Dry mouth

  • Headache

Anyone who believes they may be suffering from mumps should make contact with their family doctor.

This guide should not be viewed as providing authoritative advice on mumps. More detailed information can be found on the NHS Direct website.
